"Queen Bee's Visit
World's Greatest Dessert Party

Desserts, Desserts, and More Desserts!!!

In February, the "Queen Bees" and their mentors, attended the "World’s Greatest Dessert Party" at the Dow Diamond in Midland, Michigan. The "World's Greatest Dessert Party" is the annual fundraiser of the Literacy Council of Midland County.

"Queen Bee's" is a mentoring program in which young girls are matched with individual mentors. The mentors serve as valuable role models.

During the course of their time together, mentor's and mentee’s develop a strong supportive relationship. As the relationship grows it serves as a powerful tool for teaching and developing skills which often serve to give the young mentee's a sense of empowerment. This often results in happier and healthier young people.

The mentoring relationships of "Queen Bee's" also provide an opportuntity for students to build a trusting relationship with someone who is committed to their well being. The consistency of the mentor in their lives gives each young lady a safe environment in which they can grow and be themselves without fear of being judged. The relationship also gives them someone to confide in and seek help and direction when needed.

Every year the Literacy Council graciously donates tickets to the School Age Program of West Midland Family Center so that WMFC students can attend the dessert party free of charge. WMFC staff members use the event as a learning experience for their students.

This year 10 girls from the "Queen Bee's" Program and their mentors, were able to attend the party. What a great night it was for everyone involved! EVERYONE had a great time taking part in the wonderful new experience. They enjoyed every "bite" of it!

WMFC salutes the Literacy Council of Midland County for partnering with us as we seek to make a difference in the lives of the young people in our community!
