Junior Lifeguard Program
Junior Lifeguarding is a mentoring program that introduces students to the skills needed to become future lifeguards. Upon admittance into the program students are partnered with a WMFC Lifeguard who takes the role as their mentor. Lifeguard mentors work side by side with Junior Lifeguards throughout the summer teaching them lifeguard and leadership skills.

The Junior Lifeguard (JL) Mentoring Program helps prepare students for the Red Cross Lifeguard Certification Course. While in the WMFC Junior Lifeguarding Program students practice many of the lifeguarding skills that are required to pass the Lifeguard Certification Test.

Students interested in the program are required to go through a selection process which includes filling out an application and completing an interview. Students must also be able to perform advanced swimming skills by completing a 200 yd. swim (without stopping) prior to applying for the program.

Space in the JL Mentoring Program is very limited.Preference is giving to those students who have completed 7th grade, exhibit positive leadership skills, are good role models, and have taken part in the WMFC "Water World" Summer Program Option.

Students interested in being considered for the WMFC Junior Lifeguard Program should contact Renee Allen, 832-3256 for more information.

Junior Lifeguard Highlights
The Junior Lifeguard students are some of the busiest students in the summer program. They had lots of responsibilities around the pool, and lots to learn in order to become future lifeguards.

Junior Lifeguards spent their days involved in all kinds of activities that were typical of the duties of lifeguards. They job-shadow the WMFC lifeguards, help the guards clean the lockerrooms and the pool areas, and practice their "in the water" pool skills. They also had weekly classroom and testing times.

Junior Lifeguards Visit Neighboring Facilities
Offsite visits are an important part of the WMFC Junior Lifeguard Program because they serve to prepare Junior Lifeguard students to be better lifeguards in whatever type of facility they might find themselves working at in the future. Offsite visits are scheduled to a variety of different pool facilities to familiarize students with the different needs and challenges that they might find in different facilities.

Each summer students have the opportunity to visit facilities such as the Midland Country Club, the Midland Community Center, Plymouth Park, Alma High School, Alma College, Saginaw Valley State University, Delta College and Central Michigan University.

Special thanks to all of the facilites who "partner" with us each summer and open their doors to our students!
