West Midland Hosts Annual
“Thanksforgiving” Awards Ceremony

West Midland Family Center recently hosted its annual “Thanksforgiving” event.

Years ago, “Thanksforgiving” was established as a tribute to, and celebration of, volunteers, donors and all those who play an integral role at West Midland, including the families that WMFC serves.

This year the action packed evening began with a ceremony to recognize some of the very special volunteers that, over the years, have demonstrated extraordinary commitment to furthering the WMFC mission.

Award Recipients included:

  • Honorary Board Member – Bob Dostal...Award was presented by Larry Reeves, WMFC Board of Director President

  • Steven Barstow Youth Volunteer of the Year - Tim Cowles...Award was presented by Stacey Urbani, WMFC School Age Program Director

  • Orrin Barrett Volunteer - Ron and Martha LaVack...Award was presented by Gail Crosby, WMFC Program Director

  • Phyllis Breedlove Friend of the Center – Beverlee Wenzel and THE ROCK Youth Center...Award was presented by Greg Dorrien, WMFC Executive Director

  • “Together, each of these individuals along with the hundreds of other volunteers, provides thousands of hours of meaningful work at the Center. We couldn’t accomplish our mission without them,” stated Susan Love, West Midland New Initiatives Coordinator.

The awards ceremony was followed by a dinner catered by Northwood University.

Approximately 250 people attended the event. The Center buzzed with activity and laughter as guests participated in an evening full of fun, family events.

Guests spent time registering for prize giveaways, visiting agency booths, racing through a giant inflatable obstacle course, playing games or simply visiting with old friends. Concurrent with the ongoing events there were agency representatives from a variety of Midland County human services organizations providing information and additional activities for all.

Members from the Michigan Community Blood Center were even on hand to give community members the opportunity to donate blood to the local blood bank.

Agencies that participated in the event included: Midland Area Partnerships for Drug Free Youth, Midland County Great Start Collaborative, Chippewa Nature Center, Senior Services, Family Children’s Services, TOPS, Early Headstart, MSU Extension, Dow College Opportunity Program, KinderKare, and Shelterhouse.
