College Opportunity Program
The WMFC College Opportunity Program equips high school students attending public schools in the West Midland County area who have limited access to post-secondary education and career planning resources with the knowledge, skills, and support needed to pursue successful futures. This four-year mentorship program connects students to community resources, empowers students through the development of practical life skills, and builds confidence and self-awareness to achieve their educational and career goals.
Our vision is that every student transitions from secondary education with a strong sense of self, a broadened perspective of the world and all it has to offer, the confidence to pursue their aspirations, and the knowledge, skills, and relationships needed to build a future rich with purpose, opportunity, and the freedom to thrive.
WE BELIEVE:
EQUITY: Everyone deserves the opportunity and support to shape their future and turn their dreams into reality.
COLLABORATION: Our greatest impact is achieved through intentional partnerships, shared responsibility, and collective action among students, families, schools, mentors, and community partners.
SELF-AWARENESS & DISCOVERY: We reach our fullest potential when we remain curious, embrace new experiences, and approach challenges with a growth mindset. We encourage ourselves and others to explore new possibilities, expand our perspectives, and continuously develop throughout our lives.
SOCIAL RESPONSIBILITY: Every person should feel valued, respected, and welcomed. We honor diverse experiences and perspectives, and create inclusive environments where everyone can show up authentically and contribute meaningfully.
DETERMNIATION: We overcome challenges by remaining focused on our shared goals, embracing adaptability, and working together to develop solutions that move us forward.
"The College Opportunity Program is a practical program which invests in something that guarantees a return: the future of a young person."
PROGRAM OVERVIEW
In the spring of their eighth-grade year, counselors or teachers nominate students for recommendation to the College Opportunity Program. These students are invited to join current COP students for the first half of their freshman year of school. In December of that year, students are invited to formally apply to the program, of which 10-12 students will be selected. Once admitted, the next four years are filled with activities designed to help prepare students for college. The students volunteer hundreds of hours – benefitting the community and connecting students to vital post-secondary resources such as scholarship opportunities, college student advisors, professionals who work in students’ area of interest, etc. They work hard academically – and are supported through tutoring and programs like writing workshops. We help enrich students’ lives by taking them on cultural excursions. From visits to cultural centers, metropolitan cities, plays, concerts, and museums, to kayaking, hiking, biking and ziplining, students get to experience a broad spectrum of all that the world has to offer. Activities are designed to help students learn teamwork, communication, and leadership skills. The Program Coordinator serves as a mentor, attending students’ extracurricular events, organizing small group outings, and modeling life-long learning and positive behaviors.
